Wow! Just WOW! (Obama Speech Full Text)

Well, why go and ruin the best political speech I've heard, firsthand, in my lifetime, with some second-rate commentary?

This is the shortest diary I've ever written. There's really nothing much more to say, other than the full-text version of the prepared speech is available via THIS LINK.

And, it looks like he stuck to the brilliant words almost verbatim.

Re: Wow! Just WOW! (Obama Speech Full Text) (2.00 / 3)

Obama was eloquent enough for all of us tonight, so I'll just say this:

McSame sucks!

No way. No how. No McCain.
by freedom78 on Fri Aug 29, 2008 at 12:02:50 AM EST

Tucker Bounds is crying (2.00 / 4)

about the "won't even follow Bin Laden to the cave he lives in" line.  You can tell that one stung McCain pretty badly.  That was the best line of the speech for me, taking on McCain's greatest strength and kneecapping him.

by Blazers Edge on Fri Aug 29, 2008 at 12:06:58 AM EST

One word summed it up: "Enough!" (2.00 / 6)

I mean, when you think about it, it's elegantly simplistic eloquence.

That was the hammer. (2.00 / 3)

It literally stopped us all.  how many millions of people physically stopped for an instant with that word?

"He had the crowd in the palm of his hand" is a cliche, but it was literally true tonight.  By a few minutes in he could cause a complete hush with a hand gesture.

This was in stark contrast to Al, who, god bless him, hamster-wheeled through his speech and interrupted the cheers so often people lost interest in cheering.  Barack let them have their say - just enough to be completely happy - and brought them back with body language.

God, it was an amazing performance.

When Obama said that (2.00 / 1)

I turned to my wife and said "That one left a mark!"

I REALLY hope the McCain campaign disputes it so Obama's people can replay video of McCain and other Repugs criticizing Obama for saying that if we have intelligence pinpointing Bin Laden's whereabouts across the Afghan border in Pakistan we should go ahead and take him out.

I can't stand to sully the memory (2.00 / 4)

of that magnificent piece of oratory with the pratings of a Tweety or an Olbermann, still less any of the jealous righties.  I want to preserve the look and sound in my mind a bit longer, not that I'll ever forget it.
I can say that it made me damned proud.  Franklin Roosevelt and John F. Kennedy are smiling down on us this evening.

That speech defied all my expectations and was near perfect.

Re: Wow! Just WOW! (Obama Speech Full Text) (2.00 / 5)

10:46.

I sat down at 10:00 and watched for 46 minutes before I even thought to check how long the speech had been going. It was long, but it felt too short and never let me turn away (until one applause break made me realize that there was a lot of substance in this speech).

So well delivered. So eloquent. So...

How screwed are the Republicans now? Do they want to move their VP announcement a few days later so that the afterglow of Obama's speech doesn't outshine McCain's next appearance?

Re: Wow! Just WOW! (Obama Speech Full Text) (2.00 / 5)

we they are making noise about delaying their convention, ostensibly because of the hurricane, but personally I think they wet themselves a little tonight.

Pat "freaking racist" Buchanan was calling it the best convention spech ever... (stunned silence)

in his words, no less:

I understand it was signed Barack Obama. It was a genuinely outstanding speech. It was magnificent. It is the finest ... I saw Cuomo's speech. I saw Kennedy in 80. I even saw Douglas MacArthur. I even saw Martin Luther King. This is the greatest convention speech. Probably the most important because unlike Cuomo and the others, this is an acceptance speech. This came out of the heart of American and he went right at the heart of America. This wasn't a liberal speech at all. This is a deeply, deeply centrist speech. It had wit. It had humor. And when he used the needle on McCain, he stuck it into McCain, and it was funny as with Kennedy's speech in 80. I laughed with Kennedy when he was needling Ronald Reagan. It was so good. Let me read you the passage, though, because this man is a professional orator and he's a writer of his own speeches.

But let me read it because this is where you get into the roll and the cadence and how a speaker can really pound a point home.

I love this country, and so do you, and so does John McCain. The men and women who serve in our battlefields may be Democrats and Republicans and independents, but they have fought together and bled together and some died together under the same proud flag. They have not served a Red America or a Blue America -- they have served the United States of America.

That is how you bring people off their feet, by pulling at their heart and guts. It was beautiful.

I mean they had to CUT him off because he wouldn't shut up about it.

We all know what a pig Buchanan is, but... (1.75 / 4)

...he was a speechwriter with Safire in the Nixon administration.

While Buchanan bloviates to the extemely disgusting far right, and he's certainly one of the most racist and anti-semitic figures in American politics of the past 50 years, the reality is that (perhaps) the one thing he is qualified to comment on is a speech!

This is pretty funny...and soooo ironic! I do love it.

Great diary from you Bob, considering you've been really on the case of the campaign so far.

I've just watched the video - went out in the UK too late last night - and I'm frankly really impressed by Obama in attack mode, angry yet justified, lethal yet precise.

I kind of always felt he had it in him, and now I'm wondering whether the Obama strategy wasn't in fact the best one...

Let McCain go negative, and have the republican base ground, and then frame him as that - not a maverick at all.

Of course, it could be just good luck. But I think they expected the attack, ceded ground (a bit like the Russians with Napoleon) and then launched a massive counterattack when they knew the enemy's strategy.

Re: Score one for the Progressives! (none / 0)

It was not only great watching Obama give as good (actually far, far better) as he got it from the Rethugs.

But, as I heard some of the crowd reaction framing it in tune with the pundits, and I'm paraphrasing it: 'After going through a couple of Presidential cycles with Kerry and Gore getting the crap kicked out of the (especially Kerry), it's nice to see a Democrat opening a can of potent whoop-ass for a change!'

And, yeah, I was hoping this would happen as soon as possible, and the timing was just so damn ....well-timed and classy and eloquent...certainly among the best-delivered, gloves-off commentary I've ever heard from anyone running for office anywhere ever. Outright perfection, IMHO.

Re: Wow! Just WOW! (Obama Speech Full Text) (2.00 / 2)

It about 0030 Friday and I am listening to President Pre-Elect Obama speech for the second time.  He gave us straight talk from the heart.  In 1968, some folk believed that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was not got for our county.  However, without Dr. King's leadership, our civil liberties and fundamental rights would not exist in our country as we know it.  Just as with Dr. King, some folk will not support (vote) Barack Obama.  In retrospect, just as the results of Dr. King's work continues to resonate throughout our country well after 40 years, Obama's leadership in The Whitehouse will produce similar results.  His legacy will thrive well after his presidency.
However, I do have major concerns, since many people within my culture have been "flip-boned" by African-American leaders such as US Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.  There are some aspects of life in America that is going unaddressed:
1.    Our justice system, especially family court, is broken;
2.    Lack of government common-sense and oversight breeds corruption at all levels of government;
3.    US Oil intake and distribution, as well as gasoline refinement, should be solely operated by the government and capitalism / privatization totally removed from the equation;
4.    Overt employment disparities are at shameful, immoral, and disgusting levels;
Those are just a few things that we did not hear in his speech, but overall President Pre-Elect Obama was right on point.

Devil's Advocate (2.00 / 1)

We're going to see a nice bounce and it's been a spectacular convention. The GOP convention is next week and they're going to pull every dirty, slimy trick in the book. You cannot underestimate the power of those tactics and they're going to get the last word.

The themes: POW, Senator Surge, and Obama is inexperienced and they'll lie about his tax proposals.

Re: Devil's Advocate (2.00 / 2)

It's coming alright, but...

...will the Republicans be able to connect with American voters like Obama did?
...will they be able to get away with it after Obama called them out on not running a serious campaign?
...will anyone even be watching their convention?

We won't know for another week and a half, but I think the GOP has just been dealt a mortal wound.

but I can't picture a good VP pic.

o  Solid Conservative - and threaten more of the dissatisfied middle

o  Centrist - and threaten more of the GOP base.

Whatever it is, it'll be discussed against the backdrop of yesterday.  I's gonna be a hard day for the GOP, is my guess.

I'm sure it's already been... (2.00 / 1)

...discussed...but, truth be told, I think the GOP'ers screwed the proverbial pooch on the calendar this year as far as Convention scheduling's concerned...and that's very good for us!

A lot of folks took this week off, so they had plenty of time to watch TV.

Next week, it's back-to-school and crunch time (all around); also, the networks and cable channels start their premieres over the next few days. Not exactly the best week for the Repub's to be competing for air time, IMHO.

Political theater (2.00 / 1)

Obama's speech was excellent on the substance, the delivery, the emotion, and the connection with ordinary Americans.  As political theater, however, it's something that has never been seen before.

Howard Fineman was saying that the GOP will have a low-key convention, especiallly since it will coincide with a major hurricane hitting the U.S.  In terms of theater, I'm reminded of the California recall election.  Jon Stewart did a really funny piece where he showed Arnold with his booming voice, Twisted Sister playing their anthem, a car being blown up, etc.  Then he showed a Gray Davis rally with polite applause.  Steward said, "Gray Davis' confetti machine must have been in the shop."  That piece made it painfully clear that Gray Davis was totally screwed.  The imagery said "only losers vote for Davis".  The issues didn't even matter anymore.

We happen to have the issues on our side, but it almost doesn't matter.  You have an eloquent young speaker with a compelling life story giving an amazing speech in front of 80,000 people.  On the other hand, you have... John McCain.  I'm really, really glad I'm not a Republican right now.
